إن الجمال الفني، بخلاف ما تزعمه تلك النظرة الدارجة، هو أسمى من الجمال الطبيعي لأنه من نتاج الروح. فما دام الروح أسمى من الطبيعة، فإن سموه ينتقل بالضرورة إلى نتاجاته، وبالتالي إلى الفن. على ضوء هذه الفلسفة الهيغيلية يمكن القول أن الفن يمثل في نظر هيغل، إلى جانب الدين والفلسفة، واحداً من أسمى ثلاثة أشكال يتجلى لها الروح المطلق.
فبالفن يرقى الإنسان حدسياً إلى مستوى الحضور الإلهي، ويعيد اكتشاف البعد المثالي للواقع، ويعطي امتداداً لا متناهياً لوجود التناهي. والفيلسوف الألماني يثبت في دروسه عن فلسفة الفن والتي ضمها هذا الكتاب، والتي استعرض فيها التاريخ العالمي للفن، يثبت أنه كذلك ناقد وذواقة كبير للجمال، ومن هنا كان ما يتميز به هذا الكتاب من متعة القراءة وقرب التناول.
