قد يتخيل البعض أن إدارة سلاسل الإمداد كمصطلح حديث هو من النشاطات الجديدة في دنيا إدارة الأعمال لكن الحقيقة أنه نشاط قديم، كبناء الهرم الاكبر فقبل حوالي 4700 عام قام المصريون القدماء بإنشاء أول سلسلة إمداد معروفة حتى الآن لتوريد أحجار الهرم الأكبر من أسوان إلى حيث يقبع في وقتنا الحالي بالجيزة.
وإدارة سلسلة الإمداد قد يخفى دورها أو لا يشعر به الكثيرين، ولكن يتم تذكره فقط في حالة فشل أو تقصير.
وإذا كانت إدارة سلسلة الإمداد والتوريد منذ الحضارات الغابرة، فإن أشكالها وأساليبها تطورت وتنوعت بشكل كبير، وامتدت إلى الشركات، فتشكلت الشركات الكبيرة متعددة الجنسيات، من خلال التكامل فيما بينها أو الإندماج، وذلك عن طريق شراء الشركات الكبيرة للصغيرة، أو التحالفات طويلة الأجل، أو العمل بمفهوم سلسلة الإمداد بين الشركات المستقلة عن بعضها البعض، وقد ساعدت ثورة تكنولوجيا المعلومات والإتصالات خاصة (الإنترنت) على التكامل في كيانات الشركات المختلفة في شتى أنحاء العالم، والتكامل بين الشركات المستقلة التي تعمل ضمن سلسلة إمداد واحدة.
