يحوي التراث الأدبي العربي الإسلامي بضع مئة حديث وقصّة منسوبة إلى عيسى المسيح. والمادّة المجموعة في هذا الكتاب، والذي أسميته "المسيح المسلم"، مأخوذة من هذه الأحاديث والقصص التي تشكّل أكبر مادّة عن عيسى المسيح خارج المصادر المسيحيّة. وارتأيت أن أرمز إلى هذا المادّة ككلّ بعبارة "الإنجيل الإسلامي" لتسهيل الإشارة إليها.
كان هدفي في الأساس عند تجميع هذه المادّة وتقديمها للقارئ إبراز صورة للمسيح غير معروفة بشكل جيّد خارج المدوّنات العربية الإسلاميّة. وقد تثير هذه الصورة فضول أولئك الذين يهمّهم فهم كيف أن حضارة دينية كالإسلام توقّر شخص المسيح وفي الوقت ذاته ترفض فكرة ألوهيّته بشكل قاطع. من هذا المنظار، يشبه المسيح الذي أقدّمه في هذا الكتاب في بعض النواحي المسيح وفقاً للتراث الإنجيلي، كما يختلف عنه في نواحٍ أخرى.
