"المراحل" بأجزائه الثلاثة وإن كان من كتب السير الذاتية، إلا أنه رحلة في التاريخ عبر حقبة زمنية تمتد بين أواخر القرن التاسع عشر والثلث الأخير من القرن العشرين بما فيها من أحداث عالمية وإقليمية ومحلية. كاتبها لم يكن مجرد شاهد عليها، ولكنه كان مشاركاً في كثير منها، خاصة ما تعلق منها بقضايا المنطقة العربية وانعكاسات الأحداث عليها. وكانت انفعالاته الخاصة في كثير من الظروف، تنعكس بعفوية صادقة، ولعل هذا أحد الأسباب التي جعلته يسجل الجزءين الأول والثاني من الكتاب منسوباً إلى الغائب بدلاً من نسبته إلى نفسه.
وسواء أكان عمر الصالح البرغوثي، شاهداً أو مشاركاً، فهو لم يكن متطفلاً على الأحداث، ولكنه بحكم ثقافته الواسعة في الأدب والتاريخ، والقانون والسياسة، وانتمائه العريض لامتداد حدود الخريطة العربية تجعل مذكراته في "المراحل" موسوعة تفرض نفسها على كل من يهتم بتاريخ المنطقة بشكل عام والقضية الفلسطينية بشكل خاص، ابتداء من جذور التاريخ القديم إلى امتدادات الحاضر واستشراف المستقبل.
