اهتم علماء الأمة منذ عهد الصحابة الكرام بسنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اهتماماً كبيراً سماعاً وتدويناً وعملاً بها وتبليغاً لها، فدوّنت الصحائف والجوامع والمصنفات والمسانيد والصحاح والسنن وغيرها من أنواع التصنيف، كما اهتموا بالأسانيد وتحروا عن الرواة ودوّنوا صحائف أعمالهم وما يتعلق بهم بكتب الرجال ونشأ علم مصطلح الحديث وأنواعه المتعلقة بالمتون والأسانيد. وكان ثمرة جهود علماء الحديث الكتاب الجامع للإمام أبي عيسى الترمذي وهو رابع الكتب الستة المشهورة يأتي بعد الصحيحين وسنن أبي داود. وقد اشتمل هذا الكتاب على فقه الحديث وعلله، وبيان المجروحين من رجاله وتعديل نَقَلَته.
ولأهمية الكتاب انكبّ عليه طلاب العلم يقرأونه ويدرسونه، فمنهم من شرحه، ومنهم من اختصره، ومنهم من صنف رجاله، ومنهم من كتب فضائله وشروطه. والإمام "تقي الدين أبي القاسم محمد الأسعردي" كان واحداً ممن انكبّوا على جمع فضائل هذا الكتاب في كتابٍ عنونه بـ"فضائل الكتاب الجامع" وضمّنه فضائل جامعة وبيان طُرقِهِ، وتاريخ وفاته، وشرطهُ فيه، وتعيين رواته، وجعل ذلك في رواية الشيخ الإمام العلامة أبي بكر محمد بن الشيخ الإمام العالم أبي العباس أحمد بن عليّ القسطلاني. وبما أن الكتاب من المصنفات التراثية الهامة لذلك عني بتذييله بتحقيق لطيف هدفه توضيح ما أبهم فيه وما أشكل من ألفاظه.
