يعتبر هذا الكتاب من أهم المراجع العلمية لقراءة تاريخ جبل لبنان الحديث وقد وضعه مؤلفه الباحث الفرنسي دومينيك شوفالييه إنطلاقاً من وثائق هامة. يتعدى الكتاب حقل التأريخ ليرسم لوحة شاملة للحقبة جغرافياً وديموغرافياً وسكانياً ودينياً. وضمت الترجمة الأمينة والدقيقة للكتاب فهارس للمصطلحات والأشخاص والأماكن وشروحات إضافية. وتأتي ترجمة الكتاب الى العربية لتخدم القراء الذين لا يجيدون الفرنسية إذ تضع بين أيديهم مرجعاً لا يزال من أهم المراجع العلمية لقراءة تاريخ لبنان الحديث.
"يتكوّن تاريخ حضاراتنا باستمرار من المبادلات التي تأتي تارة لهذه وتارة لتلك بأكثر ممّا تأتي به للأخرى. وكان نصيب لبنان أنّه كوّن نقطة إلتقاء، أي مكاناً للإخصاب، وإن كان مكاناً للصدمات أيضاً، في حقبة كان الابتكار الأوروبي قد نال فيها من النظام الذي سبق أن أتاح الدوام، لا بل والعظمة، للإمبراطورية العثمانية. هذه المواجهة شكّلت مادة تفكيري. وقد أكّدت المآسي الرهيبة التي عاناها اللبنانيّون، للأسف، منذ السبعينات، الإتّجاه الذي رسمته لمسعاي. لا يزال هذا الكتاب الذي حرّرته منذ ما يقارب الربع قرن أكثر حضوراً من أي وقت مضى لفهم تاريخ ماض منفتح على الحاضر."
