العمل الاستشهادي لم يكن يوماً ما عملاً تكتيكياً أو دراماتيكياً حتى يرجع إليه، وإنما كان عملاً وسيلياً كأقصى حالة جهادية لسحق العدو الشرس وتحطيمه نهائياً. العمل الاستشهادي ظهر ونما من حين ظهور الإسلام، مبيت الإمام علي على فراش النبي ليلة إرادة قتل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، نزوله يوم الأحزاب "العمر بن ود العامري" قتال الصحابة يوم بدر مع قلة العدد، ثورة الإمام الحسين ووقوفه بوجه جيش يزيد مع قلة الناصر، كل ذلك وغيره كان نتيجة تربية الإسلام العالية ولاروحية الكبرى، التي اكتسبها الصحابة وأبطال المسلمين منه، فدفعتهم إلى روح الاستعلاء على المثل والقيم المادية والتضحية بالذات بمختلف الطرق والأساليب.
