إذن، هنا يكمن الإشكال الذي تعامل معه هسه طيلة حياته: البحث عن القدرات البشرية وجوهر الفن في حقبة برجوازية معادية لها؛ أما توماس مان الذي كانت تربطه علاقات وثيقة مع هسه وقرأ جميع أعماله الأدبية فإنه قال عن هذه الرواية: "إن هذه الرواية الخجولة، الجريئة، الحالمة والذكية في آن مليئة بالموروثات والعلاقات الحميمة والذكريات والخصوصيات".
"إنها تخلو من كل تقليد، إنها ترتقي بالحزن إلى مستوى فكري، ثوري جديد؛ فكري ليس بالمعنى السياسي الإجتماعي المباشر، وإنما بالمعنى الروحي والشعري، إن أسلوباً حقيقياً صادقاً يعني رؤيا مستقبلية وتنبؤاً مستقبلياً".
