"المستقصى في الأمثال" كتاب يمثل مرجعاً ومعجماً لأمثال العرب. وليس هذا وحسب، بل هو مرجع لغوي إذ أنه يبحث في مسائل اللغة والنحو كما أنه يتناول القصص التي تتعلق بالأمثال ومعانيها. ولذلك يعدّ هذا الكتاب من أهم الكتب التي ألفت في هذا الموضوع، وأنه يحتوي على أمثال نادرة، وكتب بأحسن نمط ورتب على حروف الهجاء بأحسن ترتيب بحيث يجد الأمثال طالبها بكل سهولة. ولن يعثر الباحث فيه على أمثال مكررة أو تلك التي يأباها الطبع. وقد اختار مؤلف هذا الكتاب هذه الخطة ليوسع مجال الأمثال، ويمنع قارئها عن تضييع الأوقات في مراجعة الأمثال المطلوبة والشروح والتعريفات التي تتعلق بالأمثال، وهو لا يكتفي ببيان مبدأ الأمثال وموضع استعمالها بل يصور أمام القارئ الحياة الإنسانية وأحوال المعاشرة والهيئة الاقتصادية فهذه الأمثال السائرة في العصر الجاهلي توضح مقدار معرفة العرب بطبائع الحيوان سواء كانت من الوحوش والسباع أو من الدواجن وبعادات الطيور وحشرات الأرض وإذ كان الزمخشري، مؤلف هذا الكتاب، لغوياً ونحوياً أتى فيه على كثير من مواد اللغة والنحو فأصبح هذا التأليف لكونه مشتملاً على قديم الأمثال وجديدها موسوعة كبيرة لمعرفة أحوال العرب وأخلاقهم ومزايا لغة الناطقين بالضاد "والزمخشري هو أبو القاسم محمود بن عمر الزمخشري، ولد في خوارزم (فارس) سنة 467 هـ/ 1075م وتوفي سنة 536هـ/ 1144م في جرجانية خوارزم. كان عالماً كبيراً وإماماً في اللغة والنحو وهو أحد أفذاذ اللسان العربي، إلا أنه غلب عليه مذهب الاعتزال فكان معتزلياً في أفكاره. كان يرحل من مكان إلى آخر لتحصيل العلوم فزار مكة، وأقام فيها مدة حتى نال مكاناً مرموقاً في الأدب العربي، مع أن الزمخشري كان من سلالة فارسية، ولكنه كان مشغوفاً باللغة العربية بالأخلاص التام. اشتهر بكثرة تآليفه التي تنوعت مواضيعها، إلا أنه غلب عليها الطابع اللغوي.
