يقصد بأرمينية التاريخية أو الأصلية، الأراضي التي قطنها الشعب الأرمني قروناً طويلة، فحملت اسمه، وأصبحت مصطلحاً جغرافياً للأقليم الذي شمل الثلث الشرقي من آسيا الصغرى. وبحكم موقع أرمينيا الجغرافي، كانت معبراً للتجارة الدولية والتبادل الثقافي وميداناً للقتال ومحطاً لأطماع الغزاة.
لهذه الأرض تاريخ، ولشعبها محطات نضالية طويلة... يدونها "سمير عربش" في هذا الكتاب الذي يسرد تاريخ أرمينيا، الأرض التي شهدت ملاحم البطولة والتضحية... وتاريخ شعب عجن بالألم والمعاناة وغابت أرضه عن خريطة العالم قرابة خمسة قرون ونصف القرن.
ومع ذلك قامت لتؤكد وجود شعب حافظ على لغته القومية الخاصة، وعلى كنيسته الوطنية المستقلة، وبذلك حفظ كيانه وشخصيته المميزة. والهدف الذي حدا بالمؤلف إلى وضع هذا الكتاب هو إلقاء الضوء على المحن والويلات التي حلت على هذا الشعب المناضل الذي صارع المحن، وتغلب عليها محافظاً على كيانه ووجوده. وحتى لا تشكل المادة التاريخية شيئاً من الملل لدى القارئ، اعتمد المؤلف أسلوب السرد القصصي، موجزاً سرده أحياناً، وموسعاً أحياناً أخرى كما في فصل الفتح الغربي لأرمينية، وفي فصل المذابح الكبرى، التي اعتبرت أول جرائم إبادة جماعية، في التاريخ المعاصر، كذلك أفرد ملاحق خاصة، عن أقليم ارتساخ، وعن الزلزال-الكارثة، إضافة إلى جدول تاريخي بأهمّ الأحداث الأرمينية.
