بينما تعيش بلدان العالم العربي متأثرة بحال من عدم الاستقرار السياسي، فإن ذلك قد أثار اهتمام الغرب وقلقه، مما أفسح في المجال لأن يكتشف الجمهور العريض القنوات الفضائية لهذه المنطقة ومن أكثرها شهرة بلا منازع قناة الجزيرة. غير أنَّ السؤال يدور حول مدى تأثير هذه الوسيلة بالضبط؟ أي دور تلعبه؟ أي تصورات تنقلها؟ وأي مجتمع تنطق باسمه؟
إذا كانت الجزيرة تشذّ نوعاً ما عن النمط السائد، فإن الميل يحدونا لأن نضعها قبالة الأكثرية الساحقة من القنوات الأخرى في المنطقة، وذلك تبياناً لمدى اتصافها "بالديمقراطية" ومدى انعدامها لدى القنوات الأخرى.
تكمن الأهمية الكبرى لهذه الدراسة في أنها تتخطى، أخيراً، حدود هذا النمط من التفكير، وذلك انطلاقاً من مسلّمتين: أولاهما تقضي بعدم الفصل بين وسائل الإعلام والمجتمعات التي تنبثق عنها (وبالتالي العمليات التاريخية التي تخترق تلك المجتمعات)؛ وثانيتهما تقوم على مقاربة الإعلاميات العربية باعتبارها نظاماً (لا يمكن فهمها وفهم تحولاتها إلا بتحليل كيفية تطورها بارتباطها ببعضها بعضاً). لقد جرى إبراز الحالة المصرية كمثل يسند التفكير ويبيِّن كيف أن تطور نظام إعلامي بعينه هو بالطبع ثمرة لمجموعة معقدة من الضغوطات والفرص مصدرها داخل كما خارج حدود البلد الإقليمية، وينخرط فيها الدولة ولاعبو القطاع الخاص على حد سواء. أخيراً إنه مرجع موثق للغاية ويرسي معالم البحث في الإعلاميات العربية.
