هذا الكتاب جاء ليرد على أهل الإرجاء، الذين يقولون إنه لا يكفر إلا من اعتقد الكفر، أما من تلفظ به أو عمل ما هو كفر صراحة فلا يكفر، إذ الكفر عندهم هو الاعتقاد فقط، كما جاء الكتاب ليبين مذهب أهل الحق في هذه المسألة، وهو أن من وقع في الكفر عملاً أو قولاً، ثم أقيمت عليه الحجة، وبين له أن هذا كفر يخرج من الملة فأصر على فعله طائعاً غير مكره، متعمداً غير مخطئ ولا متأول فإنه يكفر، ولو كان الدافع لذلك الشهوة أو أي غرض دنيوي آخر. الكتاب حافل بأقوال أهل العلم في هذا الموضوع مروراً بأعلام القرون الأولى ومن يليهم من العلماء والفقهاء والمجتهدين الى زمننا المعاصر مرتين حسب وفياتهم والأحياء منهم حسب ولادتهم. وقد فرط الكتاب وأثنى عليه مفتيا المملكة العربية السعودية: الإمام عبد العزيز بن باز - رحمه الله - والشيخ عبد العزيز آل الشيخ - حفظه الله -.
