إنَّ بين مَن يعتبر الطائفيةَ والسياسات القائمة عليها سرطاناً ينخر جسم الدولة والمجتمع، ومَن ينظر إليها وإلى ما يديم بقاءها كأمر مقدس لا يجوز نقده أو تجاوزه، ثمة قاسم مشترك يجعل كليهما صحيحاً بمعنى من المعاني: فالأول صحيح، إذا ما نظرنا إلى الطائفية بعامة والطائفية السياسية بخاصة كطريقة حكم رجعية ومضادة للتاريخ ولحقائق المجتمع المعني، وهو هنا المجتمع العراقي؛ والثاني صحيح أيضاً، من وجهة نظر قائله، إذا ما نظرنا إليه كوسيلة "مكافيلية" لا ترى بأسا من إسباغ صفة القداسة على أفكار وممارسات طائفية دموية بقصد الإبقاء على هذا النظام السياسي وعلى طريقة إدارته وتقاسم منافعه وأرباحه من قبل ممثلي، أو زاعمي تمثيل الطائفة المعنية.
نحن، إذاً، بإزاء ظاهرةٍ يعتبرها البعضُ سرطاناً فيما يضفي البعضُ الآخر عليها، أو على أحد مشمولاتها، قداسة ما... فهل نحن بإزاء سرطان مقدس؟
يحاول هذا الكتاب تقديم مقاربة خاصة، هي أشبه بإجابة أو مجموعة إجابات مركبة لهذا السؤال/ الظاهرة، عبر تفكيك وتحليل جذورها التاريخية منذ ظهور الطوائف الدينية في العراق، عبوراً إلى واقع حالها في الراهن العراقي محاولين أيضاً إستشراف آفاقها المستقبلية.
