هذا الكتاب هو أثر جليل من آثار الإمام الراوية المقرئ اللغوي النحوي أبي حاتم سهل بن محمد السجستاني (ت 255 هـ). وهو أقدم ما انتهى إلى المحقق من الأصول في بابه. وكان هذا الكتاب مصدرا عول عليه من صنف في تفسير أبنية الكتاب وفيه ألفاظ ومعاني ألفاظ انفرد بروايتها أبو حاتم، فأورد ما ذكره من أبنية في كتابه-وعدتها نحو 610 بناء-غير مراع في ذلك في جملته ترتيبا ما. ولا توجد فيما وقف عليه المحقق من كتب اللغة والمعجمات، إلا ألفاظا منه نقلها من نقلها. وقد قام المحقق بتخريج ما في هذا الكتاب وشرحه ومناقشته وكتابة حواشيه معتمدا في ذلك صورتين عن مخطوطيته وهما مخطوطة مكتبة الشهيد علي باشا بتركيا، ومخطوطة مكتبة عارف حكمة بالمدينة المنورة.
