إن أدب اللغة العربية القديمة ، من العصر الجاهلي حتى بداية القرن العشرين ، هو أدب شعري أساسا . نستطيع أن نذكر هذا مع وعينا التام بالمعنى الذي يسنده الغربيون إلى مصطلح الأدب . وهو معنى ينال بالبتر واقع الثقافة العربية الإسلامية . فهذه الثقافة تخص بالحظوة مجالات ولغات لا تحتل عادة. في أوروبا على المثال ، مكانة داخل الأدب. لا تعني ،ادن ، ملاحظتنا التمهيدية أن الشعر كان النتاج الوحيد لهذه الثقافة، ولكنها تعني أن الشعر كان نتاجها الأول ، وأنه كان التعبير الأكثر دلالة،وكان ،حتى في حالات اقصائه الأكثر تمثيلا لأصالة عبقريتها. ومن ثم ينبغي الاقتناع جيدا بشيء معين ، هو أنه تم اعتبار الشعر العربي ، على الدوام ، مستودع هذه الثقافة تاريخها ، أي الذي يبلغ مرتبة تمجيد جماعة ،وحقل ممارسة وعي جماعي لا فردي . ولاشك أن قصائد أمير الشعراء . احمد شوقي .تكشف تماما عن استمرار هذا التصور العربي للفن الشعري. لقد استغرقت هذه الاستمرارية خمسة عشر قرنا ،وهي تشهد على ثبات مثال نادر في الشعر الإنساني ندرة تستحق الوقوف عندها. وفي أزمنتنا هذه ،التي يعمل المجتمع فيها المجتمع العربي جاهدا من أجل تحديد حداثته ،ووضع ماضيه موضع السؤال ،بدا لنا من مشروع مساءلة نصوص تؤول ثقافة معنية ، وتشير إلى اختيارات الإنسان الذي عايشها . وهكذا فإننا ،ونحن نقدم على عمل المتخصص في العصور الوسيطة،لانحس بأي استسلام إلى أوهام الفقهاء. إن التاريخ والأثر الأدبي يفرضان عليها ضرورتي الكلية والخصوصية. فالطريقة الوحيدة ، حسب ما فكرنا فيه،تلافيا للحشو والمفاجأة،تكمن في تجريب فعل الشاعر وجعل عناصر ابتداعه مشتغلة .وقد ظهر لنا ضروريا أن نستحضر بطريقة إبداعية جديد أنماط الخلق في عالم الشعر العربي القديم ، الذي يتراءى فيه كل شيء طرفي نقيض مع الحساسية الحديثة،إذ أن تجديد المعرفة بإبداع الأنماط سمح لنا بتأصيل الفهم الذي نحن نبحث عنه لهذا الإنتاج.
