يدور موضوع الكتاب حول أسس بناء المناهج وتصميمها وتنفيذها وتقويمها وتطويرها بهدف خدمة العملية التعليمية، وهو كتاب موجه إلى الأساتذة لتعلم "أساسيات تصميم المناهج الدراسية" في التربية البدنية وعلوم الرياضة.
تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من كونه يساهم في عملية إعداد المدرس فهو يعرّفه بأهداف المادة التي يقوم بتدريسها، ويمكنه من صياغة الأهداف إجرائياً واختيار الطرائق والوسائل المناسبة لتحقيق عملية التعلم ومن ثم تقويم نواتج هذه العملية بشكل مستمر بما يتوافق مع التجديد في المناهج الموضوعة.
وبناءً عليه، يشرح هذا الكتاب في ثمانية فصول أسس بناء المنهج المدرس، ويبدأ الفصل الأول بمفهوم المنهج والعوامل التي أسهمت في تطويره وتحديثه ومنها اختلاف الظروف الإجتماعية والسياسية التي ظهر فيها كل مفهوم. بينما تناول الفصل الثاني أسس بناء المنهج والفلسفات التي أثّرت في المناهج الدراسية. أما الفصل الثالث فاحتوى على مكونات المنهج، والفصل الرابع يختص في تصميم المنهج وهندسته وأنواع المناهج. وتضمن الفصل الخامس عمليات تنفيذ المنهج، واهتم الفصل السادس في "تقديم المنهج" ، والفصل السابع في "تطوير المنهج" والفصل الأخير في خصائص عملية التقويم.
يعتمد الكتاب على أهم النظريات التربوية والتعليمية في حقل التعلم والتعليم ويقدم تدريبات وبرامج مدروسة ونماذج مختارة من مراحل تصميم الدروس، كما يستعرض أنشطة وهي عبارة عن أسئلة وأجوبة خاصة بكل فصل.
