وتعنى الجغرافيا الطبيعية بمختلف فروعها بدراسة الظواهر الطبيعية التي لا دخل للإنسان في جودها، فهي تدرس الأرض بإعتبارها كواكباً من كواكب المجموعة الشمسية، وتبحث في الظواهر المختلفة لغلاف الأرض الصخري والجوي، وتلتزم الجغرافيا الطبيعية بالفكر الجيولوجي الحديث بإعتبار أن الأرض في تغير مستمر، وقد بدأ هذا التغير والتطور منذ نشأة قشرة الأرض الصلبة، ومنذ ظهور الحياة على سطحها كنتيجة للعمليات الطبيعية التي ما تزال دائبة مستمرة حتى عصرنا الحالي.
يأتي هذا الكتاب ليضيف لبنة متواضعة لهذا العلم الواسع، ولا شك أن الجغرافية الطبيعية بمواضيعها المختلفة تعتبر الأساس الذي لا يمكن أن يتكامل بدونها أي صرح جغرافي مهما كانت أهدافه، وحيث أن الجغرافيا البشرية بمختلف فروعها تهتم بالإنسان ونشاطاته فإنها لا يمكن أن يكتمل هدفها بدون الأساس المتين من الجغرافيا الطبيعية.
