دونيتز كان آخر رئيس دولة لألمانيا الاشتراكية (النازية) إنه العسكري الذي عهد إليه هتلر بكل سلطاته، وكان ذلك في 30 نيسان (أبريل) من عام 1945.
لقد دام حكم دونيتز من أول أيار (مايو) 1945 حتى 22 منه حين أوقفته سلطات الحلفاء وأودعته السجن تمهيداً لمحاكمته أمام محكمة نورمبرغ التي حكمت عليه بالسجن عشر سنوات ثم أخلي سبيله قبل بضع سنوات من انتهاء المدة.
كان دونيتز يتمتع بتربية أخلاقية خاصة بعيدة كل البعد عن ألاعيب السياسة ومفاسدها منذ أن كان طالباً في البحرية الملكية، حتى إذا بلغ رتبة القيادة برز قائداً حربياً لم يتهرب من واجبه حتى في موضى الهزيمة التي منيت بها ألمانيا النازية، فهو الذي لم يتهرب من خلافة "هتلر" وهو الذي أعطى الأمر بالاستسلام بوصفه آخر رئيس "للرايخ".
فماذا فعل دونتيز خلال توليه السلطة مدة عشرين يوماً في بلد خسر كل شيء وفقد الملايين من جنوده ومواطنيه في حرب لم تعرف البشرية لها مثيلاً؟
فمن هو دونيتز قائد أساطيل الغواصات ثم أمير البحرية الألمانية ثم المفاوض الماهر مع المنتصرين على النازية؟
