وسيتناول هذا الكتاب على ضوء هذا العلم البحث في مسألة "التنويم المغناطيسي" حيث يحاول المؤلف أن يثبت أن التنويم علم له جذوره العميقة في تاريخ البشرية وله أصوله ومبادئه. وهو في الوقت نفسه فن لا يستطيع أن يكتسبه الإنسان عن طريق التحصيل، وطالما أن التنويم فن، فقد ينقلب إلى شعوذة إلى مارسه فنان تخلى عن مبادئ الخير والحقّ، ومالَ به عن الغاية الأساسية.
وأما الطريقة التي اعتمدها المؤلف في بحثه هذا فهي تقتصر على علم التنويم المغناطيسي كعلم قائم بنفسه وغايته من وراء بحثه هذا أن لا تبقى أسرار علم التنويم المغناطيسي أسراراً بعد قراءة هذا الكتاب الحافل بالشروحات والأمثلة التاريخية والتحليل العلمي.
