يعرض الكتاب مبادئ واستخدامات أشعة الليزر بأسلوب بسيط بحيث لا يتطلب أن يكون للقارئ أي خلفية في الفيزياء أو الرياضيات، وما وضع في الكتاب هو حصيلة خبرة المؤلف العملية في مجال تكنولوجيا الليزر وكذلك نتيجة حصيلة تدريسه لهذه المادة. آمل أن يكون كتابه هذا مفيداً للطلبة الدارسين لتكنولوجيا الليزر، والمهندسين والباحثين في المجالات الأخرى من المستخدمين لأشعة الليزر في عملهم، ولجميع القراء من غير المختصين والذين يرومون معرفة تكنولوجيا الليزر وتطبيقاته.
وكتاب "تفهم تكنولوجيا الليزر" مقسم إلى أربعة أقسام، فبعد الفصل الأول والمتضمن مقدمة عامة للموضوع، تشمل الفصول الأربعة-من الفصل الثاني وحتى الفصل الخامس-مبادئ الضوء والبصريات، مع إعطاء بعض الخصوصية لأشعة الليزر. ويشمل القسم الثاني الفصل من السادس وحتى التاسع ويتضمن مبادئ عمل الليزر، وهذه الفصول هي أكثر الفصول شمولية لمبادئ الليزر. والقسم الثالث من الكتاب والذي يشمل الفصول من العاشر وحتى الثالث عشر يناقش الطرق المستخدمة لمعالجة الشعاع الخارجي من الليزر، وتكييفه ليلائم متطلبات العمل. أما القسم الأخير والذي يتضمن الفصول من الرابع عشر وحتى السادس عشر، فيتضمن الأنواع الخاصة من منظومات الليزر وتطبيقاتها، وبطبيعة الحال لا تتضمن هذه الفصول جميع استخدامات أشعة الليزر بل تستعرض أهمها، مشيرة إلى كيفية حل هذه الأشعة للمشاكل التكنولوجية، التي لم تتمكن الطرق التقليدية من حلها.
ويختلف الكتاب عن الكتب الأخرى المشابهة، حيث يمثل مجموعة من المحاضرات التي ألقاها على طلبته. وكل فصل من فصول الكتاب أنهاه بمجموعة من الأسئلة التي يعتمد بعضها على مادة الكتاب مباشرة، وبعضها الآخر تضمن ملاحظات يمكن الاعتماد عليها للوصول إلى الحل الصحيح.
