هذا بحث يندرج موضوعه فيما يطلق عليه "نقد النقد" وهو حقل شائك يحتاج إلى معرفة أدبية واسعة وخبرة نقدية عميقة، لأنه يتغيا الكشف عن آليات الممارسة النقدية وآثارها التي لا تنحصر في النصوص، بل تمتد لتؤثر في الحاضر والمستقبل.
وقد استطاع الباحث "عصام أبو شندي" أن يدرس نقد النثر العربي القديم والحديث لدى ناقد كبير هو "إحسان عباس" دراسة جادة وعميقة وشاملة. فقد حدد الباحث بدقة الحقل الذي يعمل فيه وهو "نقد النثر"، وبذل جهداً في رصد الظواهر والمفاهيم والمواقف النقدية المتناثرة في كتب التحقيق والتأريخ... الخ، ليستخلص مفهوم إحسان عباس للأدب ودوره، والنقد ووظيفته، ويستنبط عدته النقدية وتكوينه الثقافي وعلاقته بالنثر ومصادره وأنواعه. وكل هذه القضايا المهمة كانت بمثابة الأرضية الملائمة والصلبة التي انطلق منها للبحث عن رؤية "إحسان عباس" النقدية، ومدى تناغم مفاهيمه النظرية وممارساته التطبيقية، واستخلاص منظوره الخاص للأدب والنقد، وإضافاته المنهجية الفذة في نقد النثر العربي، وكيفية تعامله مع النصوص وسبل إصدار الأحكام.
ولم يكن الباحث "عصام أبو شندي" في هذا كله راصداً أو واصفاً، وإنما كان فوق هذا محللاً ومعللاً ومفسراً وناقداً وباحثاً عن العوامل والأسباب والشروط والكيفيات التي أدت إلى تميز إحسان عباس وتفرده وتفاعله مع السياق الأدبي والثقافي والحضاري.
فقد نجح الباحث في تحديد أسئلة بحثه تحديداً يتصف بالدقة والتدرج والتكامل، كما جاءت فرضياته "مقيدة" لا "مطلقة" غذ استخلصت من خلال استقراء النصوص النقدية وتفاصيل الممارسات النظرية والتطبيقية وهو أمر وسم البحث بالدقة والموضوعية والأمانة، كما وسم منهج البحث بالتماسك والوضوح والرؤية الشمولية الثاقبة.
فقد عكف الباحث طويلاً على النصوص النقدية واستخلص المفاهيم، والأدوات، والخطوات الإجرائية، والمؤثرات والعوامل، ولم يقف عند هذه الحدود، إذ كثيراً ما كان يلجأ إلى الموازنة والمقارنة والتعليل، وهي أمور مكنته من الوصول إلى نتائج جديدة ومهمة.
