يتناول هذا الكتاب بالدراسة قصص غسّان كنفاني من خلال تحليل الحبكة والشخصيّات والمواضيع والفكر السياسيّ والإجتماعيّ، من أجل الكشف عن خفايا كثيرة في قصصه القصيرة الّتي تكشف بدورها الكثير عن شخصيّة غسّان كنفاني ذاته، حتّى الذهاب إلى أنّه كان مصلحاً إجتماعياً.
فعلى الرغم من الكمّ الهائل الّذي كتب عن غسّان وأعماله الروائيّة، إلاّ أن قصصه القصيرة لم تدرس بشكل كافٍ، إذ تفتقر المكتبة العربيّة إلى كتاب مخصّص لقصص غسّان بالذات، والإضاءة على جانب آخر عن شخصيّة غسّان من خلال قصصه.
لقد تناول هذا الكتاب أعمال غسّان القصصيّة بالتحليل الدقيق، فمن حيث الموضوع يتناول الكتاب موضوعات مختلفة كالحضّ على الصمود، والإنحطاط الخلقيّ، ونبذ التقاليد، وفي فصل "الوعي السياسي" يدرس تسلسل العمل النضاليّ وتطوّره بدءاً من التعامل مع العقبات القائمة في طريق العودة، فمرحلة التحضير لمواجهة العدوّ، وصولاً إلى مرحلة الكفاح المسلّح والنضوج العسكريّ.
أما فصل "الشخصيّات" فيحلّل أدوار الذكور والإناث في قصص غسّان ومظاهرها، والشخصيّات المنتجة وغير المنتجة، والشخصيّات اليهوديّة؛ ويتطرّق في فصل "الحبكة" إلى الأساليب المختلفة التي كتب بها غسّان قصصه القصيرة، وإلى تيّار الوعي والحبكة ذات العقدة والحلّ، وقصص إنكشاف الحالة.
