الكتاب مكون من مجموعة مقالات كانت قد ألقيت أصلاً في إطار "ندوة الثلاثاء" وهي حلقة كانت تعقد مرة كل أسبوعين في فرع طرابلس، الميناء لحركة الشبيبة الأرثوذكسية، وكانت تقوم على أسئلة يطرحها الشباب حول كل ما يتصل بالإيمان وعلاقته بفكرهم وحياتهم، ثم يشاركون في الإجابة عنها مجتمعين، بإشراف محاضر، وكان جامع المقالات في هذا الكتاب واحداً من هؤلاء المحاضرين الذي كان ينسق مداخلاتهم يعرض يلقيه حول موضوع السؤال المطروح. هذا وإذ تمعن القارئ في الأسئلة التي تواردت على أذهان الشباب والتي منها تشكلت مواضيع هذا الكتاب، لفت نظره صورة عن الله تستشف من خلالها، وهي صورة إله جبار منتقم "ينزل غضبه على الإنسان" و"يقتل في سبيل التأديب" و"يرسل إلى جهنم" وأخيراً "يغني البشرية" في اليوم الأخير.
ذلك التصور عن الله استمده الشباب من محيطهم العائلي الاجتماعي وتشربوه عبر التربية التي تلقوها (وهي تربية قمعية عادة، تستند لتبرير منهجها إلى هذا التصور ولكن الشباب لم يرتاحوا إلى هذه الصورة رغم تلقينهم إياها، لا لأنها صدمت حسّهم الإنساني وحسب، بل لأنهم اكتشفوا، كم عبّرت بعض أسئلتهم، تناقضاً صارخاً بينها وبين الصورة التي وصلتهم عن الله من احتكاكهم بالإنجيل وتأثرهم بمناخه عبر انتمائهم إلى حركة الشبيبة الأرثوذكسية، فأثار هذا التناقض مشكلة لديهم ودفعهم إلى السعي لاستجلاء الحقيقة رفعاً لكل غموض هذا ما استدعى التركيز في هذا الكتاب على التعرض لهذه الصورة الشائعة بين الناس وذلك لتوضيح مسألة مفهوم الشر ووجوده في حياة الإنسان بما لا يناقض عدالة الله تعالى.
