يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى توفير نبذة مفصلة عن أنواع البحوث والأسس النظرية التي لا بد أن يعرفها الباحث في مختلف مجالات البحث العلمي، ولذلك نجد أن الفلسفة التي تحكم هذا الكتاب مزدوجة، فهو يهدف أولا إلى التعريف بالكيفية التي يمكن للباحث من خلالها اختيار منهج البحث المناسب لموضوعه بعد تعريفه بمناهج البحث الثلاثة باعتبارها مجموعة من الأنشطة المتكاملة وليست مجرد تطبيق لمفاهيم وأفكار منعزلة وغير مترابطة.
بالطبع إن ما نسميه البحث (كما في طرق البحث الأساسية) هو طريقة رسمية أكثر لطرح الأسئلة. نبدأ عادة بشيء محدد جداً نريد أن نعرفه. ثم نسأل السؤال أو الأسئلة بطريقة منظمة. وهذا التنظيم هو ما يسمى بطريقة البحث. هناك الكثير من أنواع البحث المختلفة في مجال البحوث، ويمكن أن تكون بعضها معقدة للغاية. ومع ذلك، فقد تم تجربة واختبار بعض الانواع الاساسية منها، والتي يمكن تعلمها بسهولة. على الرغم من أن العديد من أنواع البحوث المختلفة قد طور مناهج محددة خاصة بمجاله، إلا أته هناك طرق بحث أساسية مشتركة بين معظمها. يرسم هذا الكتاب الخطوط العريضة لبعض هذه الطرق الأساسية ويقدم الإرشاد خطوة بخطوة ليساعد الباحث في القيام بأبحاثه.
