هذا الكتاب هو سيرة ذاتية، بل هو أكثر من ذلك، إذ تكشف فيه مؤلفته وهي راهبة سابقة عن طبيعة المجتمع الشرقي وطبيعة نظرته إلى المرأة وما تعانيه. كما تروي تفاصيل اختيارها لحياة الزهد والتقشف وهي في الرابعة عشرة من العمر. حيث ولدت في لبنان الذي تسود فيه ثقافة مشرقية تعتبر ثقافة الفتاة مجرد تحضير للزواج والأمومة وتدبير شؤون المنزل. وحيث كان دخول النظام الرهباني يعين التخلي التام عن العالم والابتعاد عن العائلة.
كما تروي المؤلفة قصة التحول التي شهدتها حياتها إذ قررت فجأة ترك الرهينة بعد أن عاشت أكثر من عشرين سنة في البلد الذي تعتبر أنه بني تحت رعاية الله (الولايات المتحدة الأميركية).
وترى المؤلفة أن التمييز بين الجنسين هو أمر يقبل به الرجال والنساء على أنه أمر واقع ولا أحد يجرؤ على طرح الأسئلة حوله. فالرجال لا يزالون هم الحكام المطلقو الصلاحية بينما تتلقى النساء الأوامر ويطعنها. والكتاب عموماً يقدم صورة حية عن عالم المرأة الشرقية وعن النسوة اللواتي يناضلن من أجل الحرية والعدالة والمساواة.
