تدور أحداث الرواية حول صداقة النساء مع الراديو من خلال شهرزاد الجدة التي ولدت في الناصرية بالعراق وتزوجت ممتاز قارىء المقام من كركوك وأنجبا ست بنات وثلاثة توائم أولاد، وبعد ذلك يصبح لديهما إثنان وعشرون حفيداً، بينهم بطل الرواية عبد الحليم، إضافة إلى شخصيات أخرى توزعت في الرواية أهمها شهرزاد مدمنة سماع الأخبار من البي بي سي، وحفيدها عبد الحليم الرقيب الوفي الذي يعمل في قسم رقابة المطبوعات، وهناك أيضاً منار وبدر اللذان يعملان معه في دائرة واحدة ولكنهما يختلفان معه في الأفكار والمزاج.
وفي هذا العمل تتقرّن الروائية ما ينطوي عليه واقع الحال في العراق بما يتضمنه من أحداث وأزمات مر بها الشعب العراقي والوطن العربي خلال نصف قرن من الزمان في قالب قصصي يحمل وجهات نظر مختلفة لأبطال الرواية، ولكن، تغلب عليها سلطة الجدة العظمى شهرزاد التي تعشق الحروب والثورات والإنقلابات ولا تعترف بالرجال رجالاً إلا إذا ترددت أخبارهم في البي بي سي.
