يتحدث الإمام ابن تيمية في كتابه هذا عن الأخلاق الحميدة، وفضلها ومكانتها، وتأثيرها، وضرورة الالتزام والتمسك بها. ويتبين من دراسة الكتاب بأن ابن تيمية هو أحد فرسان الوعظ والإرشاد، كما كان أحد السباقين في ميدان التربية والسلوك والتزكية، فهو عالم متبحر في خفايا النفس وشؤونها، ومراميها وخباياها، وأمراضها وعللها. وهو طبيب معالج يضع الدواء المناسب للداء، ويضف البلسم الشافي للمرض العضال، ويحذر من الأمراض قبل الوقوع بها، وينبه إلى ضرورة الوقاية وأخذ الحيطة والحذر قبل التردي في مهاوي الهلكة والفساد.
يعرض ابن تيمية هذه الأمور بأسلوب جميل، مستعيناً بالبراهين الدامغة، والحجج القوية، والأدلة المقنعة. ويعتمد أسلوبه على التالي: الاستشهاد بالآيات القرآنية الكريمة والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة وبأقوال أئمة السلف الصالح، مع التعليق على أفكار الموضوع، والتركيز على ما ترمي إليه الفكرة، مع المناقشة والشرح والبيان والتوضيح حتى يصحب الموضوع واضحاً جلياً للقارئ، لا لبس فيه ولا غموض.
