إن عالم اليوم هو عالم القضايا والمشكلات في شتى جوانب الحياة الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والسياسية، فقد نادى الكثيرون من الفلاسفة والأدباء بأننا سنعيش في عالم لا يخلو من المشكلات.
كما أن عالم التكنولوجيا والإتصال حيث تتحكم قوى التقنية في جميع أوجه الحياة من النواحي المادية والمعنوية بل وفي أكثر مبادىء الإنسان والمجتمع رسوخا وشيوعا عبر التاريخ مثل الحرية والديموقراطية والعدالة والمساواة وتكافؤ الفرص وغيرها، فبعد أن كان العالم يتحكم إلى مثل هذه القوى أو المبادىء، أصبحت القوى الجديدة اليوم - قوى - التكنولوجيا والإتصال والمعلومات - تمسك بقصب السبق وسدة الحكم، فهي تهيمن على جميع العلاقات المحلية والإقليمية والدولية، وبالتالي تمثل المنطلق الأساسي للمشكلات والقضايا في عالمنا المعاصر. ولما كانت هذه القوى هي قوى تربوية في الأساس كان لا بد من ربط التربية بقبضايا المجتمع المعاصر.
ومن هذه الزاوية يمكن الحديث عن العلاقة بين التربية والتغيير الثقافي، والتربية والتنمية والتربية والتكنولوجيا والتربية والإعلام.
وليست هذه سوى عينة صغيرة من قضايا المجتمع المعاصر التي عالجها المؤلف في هذا الكتاب حيث يمكن للتربية أن تلعب فيها دورا خطيرا، ولا شك أن هناك قضايا أخرة كثيرة. فقضايا الحرية والديمقراطية وقضايا العدل والمساواة ، ومشكلات الإنفجار السكاني والتلوث البيئي وغيرها، تحتل حيزا كبيرا وخطيرا في كتابات العلماء والباحثين، إلا أن المؤلف قد اختار هذه العينة لأنها تمثل القضايا الأكثر تدخلا مع موضوع التربية في المجتمع المعاصر، أو أنها تمثل التعبير الحديث لقضايا الحرية الديمقراطية، أو على أقل تقدير فإن أي معالجة لتلك القضايا لا بد أن تتعرض لقضايا الحرية والديمقراطية وغيرها من القضايا التي تحتل مكانا بارزا من قائمة قضايا المجتمع المعاصر.
هذا الكتاب في الواقع هو ثمرة خمس سنوات طوال من البحث والتجريب والحذف والإضافة في تدريس هذه المادة العلمية في كلية التربية بجامعة الإمارات العربية المتحدة.
