الإمام جلال الدين السيوطي من الشخصيات العلمية الإسلامية المهمة، والتي كان لها حضور ثقافي وعلمي واسع في عصرها، واستمر ذلك الحضور والنفوذ بما تركته من آثار في القرون التالية حتى عصرنا هذا، حتى إن عدداً من أساتذة الجامعات العربية والإسلامية نالوا درجة الاختصاص بدراستهم جانباً من جوانب السيوطي العلمية، أن بتحقيقهم كتاباً من كتبه أو جزءاً من كتاب.. أما طبعات كتبه فلا تسل.. إنها شرّقت وغرّبت وأتهمت وأنجدت وأشأمت.. وتعددت وتنوعت حتى بات من الصعب متابعة إصداراتها من طبعاتها المختلفة..
وفي عام 1411 للهجرة عقدت الندوات والمؤتمرات في كثير من جامعات العالم العربي والإسلامي بمناسبة مرور خمسمائة عام على وفاة الإمام السيوطي.. وجمعت بحوث المؤتمرات بوطبعت في مجلدات كما أصدرت بعض الهيئات والمجامع أعداداً خاصة عن السيوطي بهذه المناسبة.. وفي سياق هذا الاهتمام العام بالإمام السيوطي رأيت أن أنجز تحقيق سيرة الإمام السيوطي التي كتبها تلميذه الشيخ عبد القادر الشاذلي، فتكون السيرة الثانية له بعد سيرته التي كتبها لنفسه وسمها بـ "التحدث بنعمة الله". وسيرة الشاذلي هذه "بهجة العابدين" لم تهمل "التحدث بنعمة الله" بل اعتمد أساساً في الباب الأول إلا أنها اختلفت عنه في سائر الأبواب وقدّمت فيها أخباراً لها دلالتها وأهميتها في دراسة سيرة الإمام السيوطي وخصوصاً أنها سلّطت الضوء على جانب من علاقته بسلاطين عصره المعاصرين له، وعلى جانب من علاقاته مع علماء عصره، كما أن هذه السيرة صوّرت بطريقتها مدى تأثير السيوطي في معاصريه واعتقاد عموم الناس به، وقد دوّنت هذه السيرة بقلم شاهد مخالط للإمام عارف بأخباره خبير بأحواله وهذا ما أكسبها أهمية خاصة وإن لم يبرئها من النهج التبجيلي والمبالغة في كيل المديح وإسباغ الإطراء وتجنّب ذكر الهفوات والمثالب وتضخيم الفضائل والمناقب مما أبعدها في مواضع منها عن الموضوعية وجعلها ذات اتجاه واحد، ومع ذلك فإنها ليست بدعاً في نهجها ولا فريدة في اتجاهها، وتبقى مفيدة للباحث تقدم له الكثير مما لا يجده في غيرها.
