يعدّ شرح الإمام السيوطي لألفية ابن مالك من أفضل شروح الألفية على كثرتها على الإطلاق، وبالقمة منها بالاتفاق حيث بلغ الإمام السيوطي في هذا الشرح من الجج إلى حيث لم يشذ عنه إلا غرائب الفن وشوارده، ومن العمق في التحقيق إلى حيث لا يدرك له شأو ولا قرار، ومن الإيجاز إلى حدّ الألغاز.
ونظراً لأهميته جاء هذا الكتاب الذي عمل المؤلف منه على تهذيب هذا الشرح وكانت خطته في ذلك التزامه أموراً هي: 1-الاختصار مع التعبير الواضح الخالي عن الإغلاق والتعقيد المخلان بفصاحة اللسان. 2-الاقتصار من قواعد الفن على ذكر ما تمس الحاجة إليه بالنسبة للشرح بأن يكون تتميماً أو بمثابة التتميم لما هو وارد فيه، والإعراض عن غرائب الفن وشوراده. 3-حلّ مشكلات الكتاب وبيان مآخذ القيود التي زادها ولم يحلها إلى كتاب آخر، كالكافية والتسهيل وشرحيهما، فإن هذه القيود كلها مستنبطة من كلام الناظم، وهذا ما سيقف القارئ عليه. 4-بيان فوائد هذه القيود وبيان النكات والدقائق التي لاحظها في تعبيراته الدقيقة أو أشار إليها إشارات غامضة، وهذه الأمور هي المقصود الأعظم من هذا التحقيق. 5-التعليق لبيان أخطاء وقع فيه الشارح المحقق لعلها لا تتجاوز عدد الأصابع. 6-التعرض إما صراحة أو إشارة لبين أخطاء وقع فيها أصحاب الحواشي والتعليقات، ولا سيما منهم ميرزا أبو طالب الذي التزم في كلامه الإغلاق والتعقيد.
