تتناول هذه الدراسة الشعر الذي قيل في بني هاشم في العصر الأموي موضوعياً وفنياً، ضمن رؤية تحاول أن تتجاوز الدراسات السابقة التي تناولت ذلك الشعر في إطار الفرق الإسلامية.
وتتعامل معه كظاهرة بارزة في الشعر الأموي، أغفلها الدّارسون وهي: أن المكانة السامية لبني هاشم بقيت مصانة في ذلك الشعر وأن أغلب دواوين ذلك العصر حفلت بإجلال الهاشميين وتقديرهم، فظهر ذلك عند فحول الشعراء كالفرزدق وجرير وابن الرقيات وغيرهم من الشعراء الذين تجاوز عددهم سبعين شاعراً وشاعرة ولم يكن الكميت وكثير عزة وأبو الأسود الدؤلي والذين ركزّت عليهم الدراسات السابقة بدعاً بين أولئك الشعراء، لذلك كان الإقتصار على شعراء معنيين أو على فئة بعينها إجحافاً بحقِّ ذلك الشّعر وبحقّ شعراء ذلك العصر.
لذلك سعى هذا الكتاب إلى قراءة ذلك الشعر قراءةً أخرى تضع الهاشميين في موقعهم السامي كما أظهرته النصوص الشعريّة في العصر الأموي.
تميزت هذه الدراسة بالأصالة في تناولها لنصوص تراثية من العصر الأموي وفي الوقت نفسه بالمعاصرة عندما درست تلك النصوص دراسة فنيّة من خلال منظور نقدي يستمدُّ رؤاه من المناهج النقدية الحديثة في منهج تكاملي كشف عن جماليات النّص الشعري ومواضع الإبداع فيه.
وتكونّت الدراسة من أربعة فصول هي: الفصل الأول: الهاشميون: التاريخ والأمجاد، الفصل الثاني: الهاشميون في النصّ الشعري "الرؤية"، الفصل الثالث: وفيه تناول المؤلف الأصباغ البلاغية التي استخدمت في البناء الأسلوبي والسردي وأبرز الظواهر اللغويّة في ذلك الشعر، الفصل الرابع: الشعر المجموع: وفيه تمّ جمع النصوص الشعريّة التي قيلت في بنى هاشم في العصر الأموي لشعراء ليس لهم دواوين أو مجموعات شعرية.
