لقد تم إخراج هذا الكتاب لكي يستفيد منه أخصائيو التشخيص التربوي وغيرهم من المهنيين والطلاب المهتمين في مجال التقييم. وقد ركز الكتاب على الأنشطة التشخيصية وإجراءاتها ما يتطلبه تقييم الطلاب المعوقين وفق التشريعات والقوانين الخاصة بذلك. وقد عرضت هذه الأنشطة التشخيصية في إطار تشخيصي- علاجي حديث يركز على العمليات المعرفية، إضافة الى تأكيده على مهارات التقييم الإكلينيكية لتحديد خصائص الطلاب المتميزة وأنماط أخطائهم.
وقد تميز الكتاب بعرضه لأساليب التقييم المُعدلة ودمجها في منحى التشخيص ذي الخطوات الست من اجل تقييم سبعة جوانب أكاديمية أساسية. إضافة الى ذلك فقد شدد المؤلفان على ضرورة الاطلاع على التشريعات الحديثة ومتطلباتها في ميدان التربية الخاصة. وكذلك فقد تم عرض مشكلات التقييم التي غالبا ما تظهر عند تقييم كل فئة من فئات المعوقين.
وأخيرا فقد ركز الكتاب على أدوات وأساليب التقييم غير الرسمية وأهميتها من حيث تحديد مستويات المهارة المناسبة عند صياغة الأهداف طويلة الأمد والأهداف التعليمية واختيار الاستراتيجيات التعليمية المناسبة للطلاب المعوقين.
