يقوم منهج هذه المادة على النظر إلى اللغة العربية على أنها مجموعة مهارات لا بد من تعليمها وإتقانها وتمثلها لأهميتها في حياتنا اليومية، ومن المعروف أن مهارات اللغة أربع: التحدث (الخطاب)، والاستماع، والكتابة (التعبير)، والقراءة. ومادة هذا الكتاب تهتم بمهارتي الاستماع والخطاب فحسب على أن تخصص كتب أخرى للمؤلف لمهارتي القراءة والكتابة.
وبشكل عام يتكون هذا الكتاب من اثنتي عشرة وحدة يحتل مكان الصدارة في كل منها نص يعالج موضوعاً معيناً، حيث حرص على اختيار نصوص منوعة تحقق فائدة معينة لدى الدارس أو المستمع. تليها أسئلة تفحص مدى استيعاب المستمع للنص، تلي ذلك تدريبات على فهم أو استنتاج معاني المفردات من السياق الذي وردت فيه في النص. تتبع ذلك مجموعة من التدريبات اللغوية والنحوية والصرفية والإملائية، وبعض الأخطاء الشائعة المنتشرة بين الطلبة وغيرهم، وتنتهي كل وحدة بموضوع للتحدث والخطاب لقياس قدرة الطالب على التعبير عن بعض المواضيع أمام زملائه وأستاذه حتى تتحقق الفائدة المرجوة من هذه المادة وهي إتقان الطالب مهارتي الاستماع والخطاب.
