يتحدث ثلاثة من المفكرين العرب "مصطفى التواتي"، "محمد بن أحمودة"، "صادق جلال العظم" في هذا الكتاب عن تأثير حركة التنوير الأوروبية على الشرق وخصوصاً مجتمعنا العربي. بداية يتناول مصطفى التواتي تأثير فلسفة الأنوار على اثنين من رواد النهضة العربية في القرن التاسع عشر هما: خير الدين التونسي في كتابه "أقوام المسالك"، والطهطاوي في كتابه "تخليص الإبريز" فيعرض هذا التأثر والتأثير بموضوعية فكرية غنية بمادتها وبمناقشاتها عاكساً أفكار فلاسفة التنوير وتناول هذين الرائدين لها. ثم يعمد محمد بن أحمودة إلى مناقشة علي عبد الرزاق في الأصالة والحداثة، وخصوصاً كتابه "الإسلام وأصول الحكم"، وموقفه من الحداثة المتضمن لوحدانية العقل والتسليم بعالمية الفكر الغربي. أما صادق جلال العظم فيناقش التعددية من خلال مفهومي التقدم والتخلف كمفهومين برجوازيين وانسحابهما على مفهوم الأصالة والحداثة، معتبراً أن الحروب الصليبية هي نقطة الفصل بين تكافؤ الشرق والغرب.
في خضم السجال الفكري القائم اليوم بين ثنائيات: أصالة-حداثة، تطور-جمود؛ تقدم-تخلف؛ شرق-غرب؛ إلخ... نقدم هذا الكتاب، لثلاثة من المفكرين العرب: مصطفى التواتي، محمد بن أحمودة، وصادق جلال العظم، كمساهمة في هذه الحركة الفكرية الناشطة عن تأثير حركة التنوير الأوروبية في على الشرق وخصوصاً كتابه "الإسلام وأصول الحكم"، وموقفه من الحداثة المتضمن لوحدانية العقل والتسليم بعالمية الفكر الغربي.
أما صادق جلال العظم فيناقش التعددية من خلال مفهومي التقدم والتخلف كمفهومين برجوازيين وانسحابهما على مفهوم الأصالة والحداثة، معتبراً أن الحروب الصليبية هي نقطة الفصل بين تكافؤ الشرق والغرب، وأن مصدر العقدة النفسية الهالة، التي يعاني منها الفكر بالنسبة لمشكلة التقدم، هي إقحام العرب وإدخالهم عنوة في نسيج العالم الحديث.
