عرف فقهاء المالكية فكرة المختصرات منذ أوائل القرن الثالث الهجري، ثم اتسعت فكرة التأليف على تلك الطريقة بداية من القرن الرابع،
ويُعدُّ مختصَرُ الإمام الفقيه المحدّث أبو مصعب أحمد بن أبي بكر الزهري (242هـ) من أهم المصادر الفقهية المالكية المعتمدة خلال القرن الثالث الهجري، فقد ضمَّنه ـ رحمه الله ـ خُلاصات ما تلقّاه مشافهة عن شيخه مالك بن أنس من آراء فقهية، بعد أن انتقى منها ما يصلح لأن يُرتَّب على الأبواب.
ومن خصائص هذا المختصر التي تميزه عن غيره من المختصرات، أنّه لم يعتمدْ أيَّ قولٍ من أقوال الفقهاء ممن تقدَّمَ مالكاً ـ رحمه الله ـ أو جاء بعده من كبار تلاميذه، بل قَصَـرَهُ ـ في الغالب ـ على رأي الإمام مالك وحده، وإن كان يأتي في بعض الأحيان بآرائه واختياراته الخاصة به.
وتتجلى جلالة هذا المختصر في كونه من الأصول الأولى المصنفة في المذهب المالكي، إضافة إلى كون مصنفه من أعلام المدرسة المالكية المدنية
