ازدهرت الحركة الأدبيّة في مصر والشام زمن الأيّوبيّين والمماليك، وقد تنوّعت مظاهر ههذ الحركة وتعدّدت إتّجاهاتها، وكان أدب الجهاد يمثّل تيّاراً قويّاً في ذلك الأدب، إذ استغرق كثيراً من الجهود الفنيّة للشعراء والنّاثرين، وقد درس الباحثون المحدثون هذا الأدب وحلّلوا قضاياه الموضوعيّة والفنّيّة.
وثمّة إتجاه أدبيّ قويّ آخر ظهر في مصر والشام في ذينك العصرين، وهو الأدب الّذي يمثّل مظاهر الحياة الإجتماعيّة، ويصف حياة النّاس، ويصوّر أنماط السلوك اليوميّ، ويعبّر عن معاناة العامّة والفئات الفقيرة، وهو إتّجاه لم يُعْنَ به الدارسون إلاّ قليلاً.
ويرمي هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة جوانب من الأدب الإجتماعيّ في مصر والشام زمن الأيوبيّين والمماليك كما تمثلت لدى بعض الأدباء في هذين العصرين، بغية الكشف عن الدور الذي نهض به الأدب، بإعتباره نشاطاً إنسانيّاً إبداعيّاً، في التفاعل مع الواقع الإجتماعيّ، ونقل نبض الحياة آنذاك بطريقة فنيّة تعبيريّة تختار من الواقع بعض الجزئيات وتقدّمها بأسلوب يثير الوعي بها، ويوجّه الأنظار إليها، ويعمّق من الفهم للحياة.
ويضم هذا الكتاب خمس دراسات؛ تناولت الدراسة الأولى (العمران الإجتماعيّ في بلاد الشام)، وتناولت الدراسة الثانية صوراً من الحياة الإجتماعيّة للفرنجة في النثر الفنيّ في القرنين السادس والسابع الهجريين، وكانت الدراسة الثالثة بعنوان: "النقد الإجتماعيّ في الشعر الشاميّ زمن الحروب الصليبيّة".
أما الدراسة الرابعة فقد خُصِّصَتْ لدراسة النزعة الإجتماعية في شعر البوصيريّ، وجُرِّدت الدراسة الخامسة لتحليل الرؤية الإجتماعيّة في أدب ابن دانيال الموصلي: شعره وتمثيليّاته.
