يسعى هذا الكتاب الهام إلى الترجمة لطائفة من الشعراء الشاميّين الذين عاشوا في العصر الأيوبي، ودراسة مجمل أشعارهم، أو تحليل ظاهرة موضوعيّة أو فنيّة باردة في هذه الأشعار.
وقد اختار المؤلف سبعة من هؤلاء الشعراء، هم: 1-ابن الدهّان الموصليّ 581هـ، 2-أسامة بن منقذ 584هـ، 3-شهاب الدين السُّهرورديّ 587هـ، 4-فتيان الشاغوريّ 615هـ، 5-الرشيد النابلسيّ 619هـ، 6-ابن عقيل الزُّرعيّ 622هـ، 7-ابن عُنَيْن 630هـ؛ وقد تنوعّت بواعث الإختيار لهؤلاء الشعراء؛ فأين الدهان شاعر جوّال مغترب ذو شعر جزل رصين، وله ديوان مطبوع لم يُدرس، أما أسامة بن منقذ فهو من أعلام الشعراء الشاميّين، ويمثل شهاب الدين السهرورديّ التصوّف الفلسفي الإشراقي، وحظيت فلسفته بإهتمام الدّراسين المحدثين، وابن عقيل الزرعيّ شاعر شاميّ حورانيّ مغمور ضنّت المصادر عن الترجمة له.
وأما الرشيد النابلسي فقد وصفته المصادر بأنّه شاعر الملوك والسلاطين، ونوّهت بشعره، وذكرت أنّ له ديواناً يقع في مجلّدين كبيرين، ونوّهت المصادر بشاعريّة فيْتان الشاغوري وذكرت أنّه أحد شعراء بلاد الشام البارزين في العصر الأيوبي، وقد لوحظ كثافة الإستدعاء القرآني في شعره وإستخدامه أداة رئيسية في إنتاج الدلالة وبناء العبارة.
ويُعدُّ ابن عُنَين من شعراء الهجاء والسخرية البارزين في العصر الأيوبي، وهو يعبّر في هذا الشعر عن تجربة عميقة ترفض مظاهر الفساد في السلوك الإنساني، أو ما يعتقد أنه كذلك، وقد دُرس هذا الشّعر من الناحيتين المضمونيّة والفنية، لتبيين النماذج البشرية التي انتقدها والشخصيّات التي سخر منها، والأساليب الفنية التي توسّل بها في هجائه وسخريته.
