يمثل منهج ابن سنان نمطاً في مجال البحوث البلاغية والنقدية، فالقاعدة البلاغية قيمتها في سبكها وصياغتها في أسلوب جديد؛ ولهذا اعتمد ابن سنان في دراسته على الأسلوب أساساً للوصول إلى الجمال في فن القول، لا البحث في الحدود، ووضع القواعد من حيث هي ضوابط، فتلك الدراسة قد أغفلت الجانب الأهم منها، في حين يرى ابن سنان أن الأنماط السائدة في الدراسات البلاغية يومئذ لم تكن لترضي طموحه ومنهجه.
لذا فقد اختط منهجاً جديداً للدارسين رأى أنه أجدى وأنفع من البحث القواعد البلاغية، وهذه الدراسة التي تقوم بها ستغنى بدراسة هذه الجوانب الأسلوبية في فكره، تلك الجوانب التي نراها أساساً للتفكير الأسلوبي عند القدماء، ولا ينفي هذا وجود إشارات عند السابقين له.
وعلى الرغم من فكرة ابن سنان في الأسلوب، فإنها لا تزال غامضة حيث إن الدراسات التي قامت حولها شحيحة تحتاج إلى مزيد من الدراسة، الأمر الذي دعا المؤلف إلى البحث عن نظريته في الأسلوب، ومن ثم الكشف عن جانب مهم في الدراسات البلاغية والنقدية، ثم التعامل مع الدعوة القائلة بترك البلاغة القديمة والتعامل مع الأسلوب على أنه - في إعتقادهم - حديث، فدراسة ابن سنان توضح بجلاء أن دراسة الأسلوب قديمة قدم التراث البلاغي عند العرب.
وقد اتبع المؤلف في هذا الكتاب المنهج الإستقرائي التاريخ المقارن الذي يقوم على التتبع والوصف والتحليل جميعاً، ويعنى بالفكرة البلاغية، ويرجعها إلى أصلها الذي انبثقت منه، مراعياً في ذلك الناحية التاريخية في التأليف.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب في خمسة فصول: الفصل الأول: عن شخصية (ابن سنان) وفي الفصل الثاني تناول مفهوم الأسلوب ومباحثه، وفي الفصل الثالث تناول تطور نظرية الأسلوب عنده، وفي الفصل الرابع تناول منهجه في نظرية الأسلوب، وفي الفصل الخامس تناول (ابن سنان بين التأثير والتأثر).
