أعدت دروس هذا الكتاب لتلقي على طلبة السنة الرابعة أثناء سنة 1981-1982م، وقد هدفت إلى البث في الطلبة روح البحث المتعمق. وفتح آفاق جديدة أمامهم لدراسة الأدب. وقد تم اختيار قصيدة أبي البقاء الزندي "النونية" للدراسة ولتطبيق عناصر "نظرية" نحتت مما ورد عند بعض النقاد العرب القدامى من مبادئ، ومما انتهت إليه الدراسات الشعرية –السيميائية الآن. فالمحاولة –إذن- تدخل ضمن القراءة المتعددة.
وهي بشكل عام تتألف من قسمين: نظري، ويحتوي على: بعض المعطيات المتعلقة بالشاعر وبالقصيدة، قراءة القصيدة على ضوء معايير عصرها، قراءتها على ضوء المناهج الحديثة، وهذا هو جوهر هذا القسم. تطبيقي، ويشمل محورين رئيسيين تحتهما محاور فرعية: الأسطورة والتاريخ (الدهر/الإنسان)، التاريخ والأسطورة (الدهر-الإنسان/الإنسان).
