تناول الكتاب جانباً من جوانب عبقرية العربية، وسمة بارزة من سماتها التي تشكل مرآة صافية تعكس وجهها الصريح وتتجلى فيها ملامحها الذالة المعبرة. وقد رأينا من خلال ذلك أن العربية لغة مرنة مطواع، لها من خصائصها في التراكيب والسياقات، وأسرارها في الصياغة، وطرائقها في التعبير ومزاياها في التوليد وتشقيق الدلالات، ما يجعل منها لغة عظيمة الشأن، جليلة المقدار.
نشأت ظاهرة الوصل والفصل في أحضان علم القراءات، حيث كانت الحاجة ملحّة للإهتمام بمواضع الوقف والإبتداء، والأخذ بالحسبان ما بين كل آية وتاليتها من اتصال أو انفصال، وتبيّن مظان الوصل والفصل في القراءة للإستعانة في هذا كله على إدراك المحتوى الفكري للآيات واستبطان دلالاتها.
وللنحويين جهور طيبة في هذا المضمار بيد أنهم لم يتوقفوا عند "الوصل والفصل"، ظاهرة لها تقسيماتها ومصطلحاتها، ولم يلتفتوا إليه مبحثاً مستقلاً يضمونه في نسق معين ليخصّوه بالدرس الوافي، وإنما كانت آراؤهم نظرات متناثرة في مباحثهم النحوية دون النص عليها صراحة أو تقييدها بالمصطلح. ثم جاء البلاغيون فتلقفوا إرث علماء النحو الذي أضحى زادهم الطيب ومعينهم الذي لا ينضب، فجنحوا إلى رصد قواعد الوصل والفصل والتعريف بأدواته وتقسيماته، فغاية الوصل عندهم ربط معنى بمعنى بأداة لغرض بلاغي، أما الفصل فهو قطع معنى عن معنى بإداة لغرض بلاغي.
