سيطرت أفكار أرسطو على عقول كبير من متفلسفة الحضارة الإسلامية، منذ القرن الثالث الهجري، ثم علت موجة الهجوم عليه إبتداء من الغزالي، كما سيطرت فلسفته على عقول كثير من اللاهوتيين المسيحيين من أوروبا منذ القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي، ثم علت موجة الهجوم عليه إبتداء من عصر النهضة الأوروبية وبلغت ذروتها مع بيكون وديكارت. ومع ذلك، يبقى أرسطو إلى اليوم علماً لا مخيص للمتتبع لتطورات الأفكار، فضلاً عن دارس تاريخ الفلسفة، عن معرفة مذاهبه معرفة دقيقة، بل إن نظرياته لتعود إلى الحياة في الحضارة الغربية اليوم مع مذهب الفلسفة التوماوية الجديدة، ولها من يمثلها في اللغة العربية الحديثة.
وهذا الكتاب، الذي يسد! بعض الفراغ الكبير من المكتبة العربية فيما يخص أرسطو، وهو تعريف وثيق شامل ومبسط لأهم جوانب الفلسفة الأرسطية، وكتبه الفرد أدوارد تايلور، وهو عالم من أعلام دراسة الفلسفة اليونانية من بريطانيا، وعرف أيضاً بكتاباته عن أفلاطون، وعن سقراط، فضلاً عن أنه كان فيلسوفاً ذا آراء يختص بها، وأشهر كتبه: "أفلاطون: الرجل وأعماله"، "مبادئ الميتافيزيقا".
