يقول الله تعالى في محكم تنزيله "وشرع لكم من الدين ما وصّى به نوحاً". هذا القول يؤكد على أن الوصية هي من أقدم العهود الإلهية بالنسبة إلى الأنبياء ومنهم بالنسبة إلى أممهم. يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن الوصية تقوم على تواصل الأجيال من خلال انتقال الأمور المعنوية والمادية من السابقين إلى اللاحقين. وبالتالي هي ضرورة لحفظ كيان المجتمع عقائدياً وتربوياً وأخلاقياً وإقتصادياً.
وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع المؤلف أهم الوصايا الشرعية لعلماء المسلمين، وضعها تحت عنوان "وصايا العرفاء" وتتضمن أهم ما وصل إلينا من وصايا تتعلق بكافة الأمور العلمية والعملية وخصوصاً ما يتعلق بالأخلاق والمواعظ والتقرّب إلى الله تعالى، مع ذكر بعض رسائل العلماء المشتملة على إرشادات ووصايا في السير والسلوك.
من وصايا العرفاء نذكر: "وصية أبو ذر الغفاري" ، "وصية السيد علي بن طاووس" ، "وصية العلامة الحلي" ، "وصية الحر العاملي" ، "وصايا الفيض الكاشاني" ، "وصايا التراقي" ، "وصايا السيد أحمد الكربلائي" ، "وصايا السيد الخميني" ، "وصايا الشيخ حبيب الكاظمي" ... الخ.
