لقد قال محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم إنما بعثت لأتمم مكارم الأخلاق" فهل الفضائل ناقصة قبل بعثته بالفعل-على الرغم من وجودها؟ وإن كانت كذلك فهل النقص كائن في العدد أم في الطبيعة؟ وما هي تلك الوسائل التي تم استخدامها فلسفياً من أجل الوصول إلى الفعل الخلفي التام؟ إن هذا الكتاب جهد متواضع لإدراك طبيعة الفعل الخلفي في كل حالاته، عبر الفلسفة والقرآن، بقصد الوصول إلى عقلنة. وهو يشكل عام يناقش المسائل التالية: علم الأخلاق، القانون والفعل الخلفي، الموت والأخلاق، الأخلاق الغرائز، الإرادة والأخلاق، طبيعة القيم الأخلاقية، الضمير، الأديان والأخلاق، الأخلاق والواجب لذاته، السعادة والأخلاق، الجامعة الإنسانية، الأخلاق وقيمة الإنسان، الوهية المجتمع، الأخلاق والمدح، الغدد والفعل الخلفي، العقل والإيمان.
هذا الكتاب يعرض فيه المؤلف بأسلوب حواري سهل للصراع المرير ما بين الفلسفة والدين حول مشكة علم الأخلاق.
الفلسفة وعلى التعميم، تُصرّ على نفي الدين بما له من طبيعة خاصة عن إيجاد الفعل الخلقي، ولهذا بحث المؤلف في طبيعة وبنية الفعل الخلقي فلسفياً ودينياً، ليقول على الإطلاق: انه لا أخلاق دون دين أو إيمان، حتى عند الفلاسفة، ولكن القرآن من جهة أخرى، بالإيمان (يهدي للتي هي أقوم)، مهما تعددت السبل، ومهما اختلفت الأمكنة والأزمنة.
