لما كان يشعر المهلهل أهمية متميزة في الأدب والتاريخ العربي جاء عمل محمد علي أسعد في هذا الكتاب الذي جاء في إطار رسالة علمية. وقد عمد إلى تهذيب أحد الطباعات وهي (القوال) التي جمع فيها ديوان المهلهل، وكان عمله على النحو التالي: شرحه لكل ديوان المهلهل بيتاً بيتاً مع ضبطه للشعر كله كاملاً مع التعليق على أسباب الضبط في حالة الضرورة، توثيقه الشعر من مصادر لم يصل إليها صاحب الديوان، مع تتبعه اختلاف الروايات في كل كلمة أو بيت إذا اقتضى الأمر ذلك، ذكره اختلاف نسبة بعض الأبيات إلى المهلهل وإلى غيره في آن واحد، تقديمه دراسة تاريخية مفصلة ودقيقة سلط من خلالها الأضواء على شعر المهلهل، وكشف عن مناسبات القصائد والمقطعات. كما عنى بدراسة أدبية فنية وضح من خلالها شاعرية المهلهل واتجاهاته، مع شرح لمعنى البيت وتوضيح ما فيه من تأويل، إن وجد. مع ذكر مناسبة البيت أو القصيدة إن وجدت ولزم ذكرها، مع ترتيب الشعر الوارد ترتيباً ألفبائياً للمروي، مع إدخال ما قاله من رجز في مكانه من الديوان.
ولما كان المهلهل بطل حرب البسوس التي جرت بين بكر وتغلب، فقد استهل الديوان بفصل عرف فيه بقبيلته، ومكانتها، ومضاربها، ومعتقداتها، والأسباب التي أدت إلى حرب البسوس، كما قام بتعريف رجال هذه الحرب وأبطالها، وبأهم أيامهم في هذه الحرب؛ لأن فهم شعر المهلهل وحياته هما مرتبطان بفهم هذه الحرب، وما أحاط بها، إضافة إلى كونها جزءاً خاصاً من أخبار الشاعر نفسه، واستتبع ذلك بفصل عرّف فيه الباحث بالشاعر، وبأسرته، وببعض أخباره وأخبار أهله وبناته، مع تتبعه المهلهل إلى اليمن، حيث فرَّ إلى هنالك، فبسط ما وصل من أخباره عند بني "خبب" إلى أن توفي. فكان مقتل كليب موقد أولى جمرة لحرب البسوس، وموت المهلهل آخر بصيص لهذه الجمرة.
