كان الإمام علي رضي الله عنه، يقدّر الشعر، ويتمثل به، وينشده، ويرويه، وينظمه، وينقده، ويكرم الشعراء، ويحبذ على تعلمه... وبهذا يمكن القول بأن الإمام علي رضي الله عنه كان شاعراً، وان اختلف الرواة في القدر المنسوب إليه من الشعر، فقد نحله بعضهم ديواناً من الشعر فيه عشرات القصائد والمقطوعات، وفيها الكثير من غث الشعر وركيكة مما حدا ببعضهم أن يوّجه النقد أو يشكك في الجيد من القول عنه عليه السلام ولهذا حظي شعر الإمام علي رضى الله عنه، وما نسب إليه باهتمام العلماء البالغ وعنايتهم التامة، فعمد البعض إلى جمع شعره، وروى لمقطوعات منه، وحفظ لبعض أبيات منسوبة إليه... ويعد أبو الحسن، قطب الدين بن الحسين البيهقي الكيدري ممن اعتنوا بجمع شعر الإمام وحفظه. وهو في هذا الكتاب يجمع ما وقف عليه من درر أشعار الإمام علي رضي الله عنه، مرتباً قوافيها حسب ترتيب حروف الهجاء.
هذا وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً، وتجلى عمل المحقق بـ: أولاً ثبت الوزن الشعري لكل قصيدة أو قطعة، ثانياً: عرض القصائد على كتب الأدب والتاريخ واللغة والنحو والمجامع الشعرية، ثالثاً: شرح ما أبهم من الكلمات، رابعاً: تحقيق الأحداث، وإسناد رواية الشعر، وتراجم الأعلام إلى المصادر الموثوقة. كما وعمد المحقق إلى إضافة أو استدراك بعض القصائد، والمقطوعات والأبيات والأخبار المنسوبة إلى الإمام علي رضي الله عنه والتي ترد في (أنوار العقول). وبالنظر لكثرة تداول القصيدة الزينبية المنسوبة للإمام علي رضي الله عنه، وإتماماً للفائدة، عمد المحقق إلى دراستها وتتبع نسخها المخطوطة والمطبوعة عنها، وإثباتها بعد التحقيق لصاحبها ملحقاً إياها في آخر الكتاب.
