هذا الكتاب هو دراسة حول تاريخ السينما الألمانية. لم يبدأ تطور الفيلم الألماني إلا بعد نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى في عام 1918 حيث صعدت التعبيرية الألمانية في السينما، في موازاة التعبيرية الالمانية في الفن التشكيلي، وشهدت العشرينات في واوائل الثلاثينات من القرن العشرين ولادة روائع الأفلام الألمانية. وكانت هذه الأفلام تكشف عن المخاطر التي أدت الىصعود النازية بقيادة هتلر الذي دمر الفن والحياة وجر شعبه الى جحيم الحرب العالمية الثانية. زيغفريد كراكاور فيلسوف السينما يؤرخ لتلك الفترة التي عاشها وكتب عنها بعمق. ويتحدث في كتابه هذا عن المراحل التالية: المرحلة المبكرة، فترة ما بعد الحرب 1895-1918، فترة الاستقرار 1918-1924، مرحلة ما قبل هتلر 1930-1933.
