كان النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم يروي على مجالسيه من المسلمين العديد من القصص الدينية الهادفة والمعبرة عن التوجه الديني الإسلامي. وهو في قصصه هذه كان يتوجه إلى المسلمين البالغين من مجالسيه ليعتبروا بما يسمعون من الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، ولتكون هذه القصة بالنسبة لهم عبرة يعتبرون بها، ولكن هذه القصص هي مما يصعب على الأطفال من الناشئة فهمه لما تحتويه من ألفاظ صعبة الفهم عليهم، ولتذليل هذه الصعاب عني المؤلف "محمد علي ضناوي" بإعادة صياغة بعض هذه القصص بأسلوب يغلب عليه طابع الخيال وضرورات التحليل ومعطيات الذوق الجمالي وهذه القصة التي بين أيدينا هي واحدة من القصص المروية على لسان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهي تحت عنوان "ألف لا تضيع".
