التهاب جيوب الأمعاء هو عبارة عن نمو كييسات طائرة على جدار أي عضو مجوف في الجسد مثل الجهاز الهضمي. ورغم أن التهاب جيوب الأمعاء الغليظة، قد يكون من الخطأ تركيز الانتباه فقط على هذه المساحة الصغيرة من القناة الهضمية ومحاولة علاج آفات الأمعاء بمعزل عن باقي الجهاز الهضمي، وهذا ما يحاول الكاتب تداركه حيث يتابع رحلة الطعام منذ دخوله إلى الفهم حتى اللحظة التي يتم فيها إفراز الفضلات غير المطلوبة، مبيناً عمل ووظيفة كل عضو عندما يعمل بشكل طبيعي والذي يحقق أعمالاً بارعة في إطار الأيض والامتصاص (تحويل الغذاء إلى أعضاء الجسم في إطار تغيرات كيميائية في الخلايا الحية لتأمين الطاقة الضرورية بمواد جديدة للتعويض عن المندثر منها)، للوصول من خلال ذلك إلى وصف الآفات والقصور الوظيفي المعوي الذي يؤدي بدوره إلى آفة التهاب جيوب الأمعاء.
