"أيها الصنمُ المكتفي بأناكْ / أيّها الجاهليُّ المُكوكِبُ في جرحِ بابلَ، ماذا دهاهم، وماذا دهاكْ؟ / تَترى قوافلَ / من حَضرَمَوتَ ومن قَندهارْ / كنتَ ملحَ ترانيمهمْ / كنتَ في فَمِهمْ: تابلاً وبهارْ / واختماراً لشمسٍ تُطرِّز ثوبَ الصباحْ / تتراقص حولَكَ -في الكرنفالات- أشهى الجواري / وتُضربُ دونَكَ ملأى القداحْ / منذ بضع سنينْ / هتفوا اليومَ ضدّك في السرّ: هذا جبانْ / أحرَقوا في الخفاء قرابينهم، ثمّ زاغوا إلى قِبلة من دخانْ / ألانكَ تَعرَى بلا خجلٍ من سِواكَ، ولستَ / تجوع ولستَ تقول، مَشوا / خلف نعشٍ غريبٍ وقالوا: / سنُسقطُ عنّا العقابْ / هُمْ يغارونَ منكَ، فلا تنجرحْ كالبخورِ / ولا تتعجّبْ إذا ما طَواكَ زمانُ..".
