لا ينتمي سليم خياطة فكرياً إلى التيار الماركسي العربي المؤسس، أي إلى التيار الذي حاول، ومنذ البداية، إعادة إستنتاج الماركسية عبر تحليل الواقع والفكر العربي ومشكلاتهما، تحليلاً موضوعياً، ومن هنا فقد كان قوس إهتمامات وموضوعات سليم خياطة واسعاً يمتد من الأسطورة إلى فكر ابن الراوندي، إلى العلاقة بين الأبيقورية والماركسية، إلى تحليل الأدب العربي المعاصر، إلى دراسة الفاشية والصهيونية والإستعمار.
ظهر سليم خياطة ثم غاب مع ظهور وغياب هذا التيار الماركسي العربي الذي كان يمثله تاريخياً وفكرياً، فؤاد شمالي في كتابه "نقابات العمال" – (1929) الذي يدعو من خلاله إلى تنظيم العمال العربي في نقابات مستقلة، ثم كتاب يوسف إبراهيم يزبك "النفط مستعبد الشعوب" – (1933) حيث يدرس المؤلف النفط، عصب الإقتصاد العربي والعالمي فيما بعد، ثم كتاب "على طريق الهند" (1935) لماركسي عراقي مجهول، وهو يحلل ظاهرة الإستعمار الأوروبي لبلاد الشرق.
ثم نذكر كتاب رئيف خوري السجالي مع قسطنطين زريق: "معالم عربي القومي" – (1941)، حيث يناقش رئيف خوري ظاهرة القومية في الوطن العربي، وهي المشكلة الأولى الأساسية في الفكر السياسي العربي، (ربما نستطيع أن نضيف إلى إنجازات هذا التيار أعمال بندلي الجوزي).
